Asthma Champion Award
Janet Capehart received the Asthma Champion award on March 4 at the 2015 North Carolina Asthma Alliance Summit held in Burlington, North Carolina.
Janet has been in the field of Respiratory Therapy for over forty years and is a Certified Asthma Case Manager since 2003. Through her job she makes home visits to reinforce asthma management by checking medication compliance, equipment technique, and provides patient assessments.
She has been involved and participated in several groups to promote asthma awareness.
She is an active member of the NC Asthma Alliance and serves on the Education Subcommittee. She also serves on the Albemarle Pediatric Asthma Coalition and local school health advisory board.
She has founded several support groups to help not only children with asthma but their family as well. Over the years, she has assisted with several asthma camps in her region.
Janet has initiated and received several grants for projects involving asthma awareness and asthma management
She conducted workshops for parents on the importance of a clean home environment.
After receiving grant funds, she was able to offer cleaning supplies and HEPA vacuum filters along with education to families that have children living with asthma.
She collaborated with the local YMCA to conduct Yoga and Asthma classes to middle school students.
The students met twice a week during the school day to learn asthma management skills as well as Yoga technique to assist with relaxation. She received funding to provide Coach's workshops for school coaches, PE teachers, and recreational organizations outside of the school setting.
The participants were given an asthma management supply bag to carry outside of physical location. The participants met twice a week during the school day to learn asthma management skills as well as Yoga techniques to assist with relaxation.

The "Winning with Asthma" curriculum was used and all coaches received an asthma guidance clipboard.
Each asthmatic athlete was given a pouch, peak flow meter, spacer and an emergency contact card.
She initiated the air quality flag program in her area for Vidant Bertie Hospital and Vidant Chowan Hospital, all schools and area recreation centers.
She conducts classes in the elementary schools using the American Lung Association "Open Airways" curriculum.
Through grants she is able to provide students with peak flow meters and spacer so that all asthmatic children have equipment available to help manage their asthma.
Janet has been devoted to the care and management of children living with asthma in Bertie and Chowan counties since 1999.
