Six Things to Know about the Vaccine

  1. The vaccine is safe and effective.

The COVID-19 vaccination will help protect you from getting Covid-19. Large clinical trials were completed and the FDA granted Emergency Use Authorizations for the Moderna and Pfizer Vaccines. The data reveals that the benefits offset any possible harms of becoming infected by COVID-19. The safety of these vaccines are continuously monitored through surveillance and monitoring systems.
  2. There is NO live virus in the vaccines.

There is no live virus within the vaccines that are currently available in the United States, therefore, the vaccine CANNOT make you sick with COVID-19.
  3. Two doses of the vaccine are needed.

Vaccines work by increasing your immunity to the virus, therefore, two doses of vaccine are needed. If you receive the Moderna Vaccine, your second dose must be Moderna. If you receive the Pfizer Vaccine, your second dose must be Pfizer. You will receive a vaccine card that will state your vaccine information and when your second vaccine is due. Also, it is important to note that it is possible to become infected by COVID-19 just before or just after you receive the vaccine. This is possible because the vaccine has not been in your body long enough to protect you against the virus.
  4. The COVID-19 vaccine is free for everyone.
  5. If you have already had and recovered from COVID-19, it is still recommended to receive the vaccine.

Due to the severe health risks caused by COVID-19, it is important to get vaccinated even if you have already been infected and recovered from COVID-19. Natural immunity, the immunity someone has from being infected, varies for each person. Currently there is not enough data to show how long someone could be safe that has natural immunity.
  6. The COVID-19 mRNA vaccines do not interact or alter DNA in any way.

It is still important to do the following even after you receive the vaccine:

  • Wear a mask
  • Stay at least 6 feet from others
  • Avoid crowds
  • Wash hands often
  • Follow CDC travel guidelines
  • Follow isolation guidance if you are sick
  • Follow quarantine guidance if you are exposed
  • Follow workplace and school guidance
