The ARHS Health Education Team is responsible for school and community health education programs, Public Health networking in the communities of care, patient education offered in the clinical setting, mass media education, the development and evaluation of educational materials, agency orientation/staff development, higher education-public health liaison work, and coalition building and coordination.

Healthy Communities strategies are developed to focus on reducing the burden of chronic disease and injury in the eight county region. ARHS Health Educators work to plan, implement, and evaluate community-based interventions that address poor nutrition, physical inactivity, tobacco use, violence, and unintentional injury.

Community Outreach

Health Educators are available and open to presenting and/or participating in health fairs, church groups, school programs and community functions by either appearing in person or providing health information on a variety of topics including but not limited to:

  • Communicable Diseases
  • STD/HIV/AIDS
  • Obesity
  • Nutrition
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancers
  • Hygiene
  • Abstinence/Safe Sex Practices
  • Contraceptives
  • Diabetes

Clinical Education

Education is provided on a one-on-one basis to health department clients to encourage healthy decisions and to connect clients with resources to achieve healthy lifestyles. Education is given on but not limited to:

  • Healthy Pregnancy Education
  • Newborn Care Education
  • Nutrition Education
  • Healthy Heart Education
  • Contraception Education
  • Parenting Education
  • Breast Self-Exam
  • STD/HIV Prevention

Grants & Special Projects

Tobacco Prevention and Education

Program Goals:

  • Decreased initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults
  • Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke and aerosol emissions from e-cigarettes
  • Decreased tobacco use among adults and youth
  • Identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities and improve health equity

Positive Parenting Program

Triple P is an internationally acclaimed multi-tiered system of evidence based parenting interventions.

Program Goals:

  • Promote the development of non-violent, protective, and nurturing environments for children
  • Promote the development, growth, health, and social competence of young children
  • Reduce the incidence of child maltreatment and behavioral/emotional problems in childhood and adolescence
  • Reduce out-of-home placements
  • Reduce emergency departments visits related to abuse and neglect
  • Reduce out of childcare/school suspensions related to behavioral issues

Healthy Foods Initiative

Program Goals:

  • Increasing the affordability of healthy, local foods by offering produce prescriptions to Medicaid patients in the Healthy Opportunity Pilot region and continuing to provide technical assistance to local farmers and farm stands/markets to encourage SNAP/EBT availability and programming to incentivize SNAP/EBT participants in purchasing more fruits and vegetables.
  • Increasing youth involvement in food access by working with local schools to enhance their gardening and agricultural programming.
  • Increasing regional shared learning about food policy and food system infrastructure.

Preconception Health

Preconception Peer Educator (PPE) Program

Program Goals:

  • Reach the college-age population with targeted health messages emphasizing preconception health and healthcare.
  • Train college students as peer educators.
  • Equip the peer educators with materials, activities, and exercises to enable them to train their peers in college and the community-at-large.

Healthy Beginnings

A minority infant mortality reduction program, that focuses on improving birth outcomes among minority individuals, reducing minority infant morbidity and mortality, and supporting families and communities.

Program Goals:

  • Provide Care Coordination Services to minority pregnant and post-partum women
  • Provide education and training on a variety of health related topics to program participants and support partners

Healthy Carolinians

Healthy Carolinians partnerships are community based networks of agencies, organizations, stakeholders, and citizens working together to improve the health and wellness of the Albemarle Region.

  • Healthy Carolinians of the Albemarle serving Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden, and Currituck counites.
  • Gates Partners for Health – serving Gates County
  • Three Rivers Healthy Carolinians serving Bertie and Chowan counties
  • Priority areas include: Healthy Lifestyles, Access to Care, and Mental Health and Substance Misuse.
