Programs Managed By EHS

ARHS Environmental Health ensures the health and safety of residents while reducing the threat of the spread of communicable diseases through evaluation and education of environmental health policies and regulations.


Private Drinking Well Inspections

This section protects the public health by ensuring proper construction of private drinking water wells. It is also committed to providing the highest quality of service to the public through its implementation of the statewide well rules.

Swimming Pool Inspections

Inspection of all public swimming pools in the six-county region.

Communicable Disease Investigations

Investigation of any communicable disease progression including food-borne illnesses with members of Albemarle Regional Health Services' Epidemiology Team.

Food & Lodging Inspections

Inspection and evaluation of each restaurant, child care center, hospital, school, jail, meat market, residential care, and nursing home, hotel, and motel in the region.

Management Enitity

Annual assessments and inspections to determine if a septic system is functioning properly. Upon site evaluation and if the system is failing, the Albemarle Regional Health Services' Environmental Health Division is notified. Recommendations are then made to improve the performance of the system.

Lead Investigations

Childhood lead poisoning investigations are evaluated by the Environmental Health Specialists and assessed through education, home visits, abatements, and re-entry into the home or building.

On-Site Wastewater

On-site evaluations, governed by the state and local rules and ordinances, are performed to determine if a site is suitable or marginal to support a septic system for utilization by the community and/or individual families.
